Art for Life
February 2011 - June 2011

During the week of March 7th through the
11th, we welcomed local artist Sue
Olson back to work with us in the
traditional glass mosaic art form.  Sue
had worked with us in the previous Art
for Life session where the residents
created “A Window to my World”.  That
work won the residents an honorable
mention in the Traditional category in the
2009 Pekin Art Show.  It is proudly
displayed and cherish by all.

Sue had the residents work on smaller
projects this time around as to involve
more residents all at once.  She had
them work on a bowling ball that
transformed into a beautiful garden
gazing ball, a plow disc transformed into
a sunflower plate, a plain flower pot into
a mosaic pot and small square tile
scenes that residents created and are
enjoying in their own rooms.
Pieper Bloomquist returned to us the
week of April 5th through the 8th.
Pieper lives in Grand Forks and
works as a nurse at Altru. Pieper also
has worked with us before and
introduced us to Swedish Dala
painting.  She taught us the difference
between Swedish Dala painting and
Norwegian Rosemaling.  The
residents worked on individual
paintings using pre-printed patterns
varnished on canvas.  The Swedish
colors that were used are more red-
orange than what is used in the
traditional Norwegian Rosemaling.
Pieper worked on a large mural
depicting the ages of man back in our
new dayroom during “down” times of
the day.  Residents and family
watched her as she magically made
the picture come alive.  We are very
excited that this picture was given to
the Care Center and now hangs in the
dayroom.
Guillermo “Memo” Guardia, a ceramist originally from
Peru, was our artist in residence during the week of
Feb.7th through the 11th.  Memo lives in Grand Forks
and works with the NCAC through the North Dakota
Museum of Art.  He was sponsored by a donation from
Foreng Insurance of Pekin.
